Pregnant dairy cattle need to
have comfort, adequate nutrition in the form of hay and silage, fresh
water, shelter, and a calm, relaxed environment. They need to be cared
for in such a way that they do not harm their growing calf inside them,
but also not so stressed out that there are increased risk of abortions.
Most dairy cattle will still be lactating during their first and second
trimester of pregnancy, then allowed a break to dry up before calving
so that the calf can have access to colostrum when the cow starts
freshening and producing milk again.
